Getting Started
What is Upstart and who is it for?
Upstart is an AI-powered web editor that lets you build and publish websites in minutes — no coding required. Whether you're creating a simple landing page or a full dynamic website, Upstart is designed for anyone who wants to bring their ideas to life quickly: freelancers, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and creative teams alike.
Do I need coding skills to use Upstart?
Not at all. Upstart's visual editor and AI assistant (Upsie) handle the heavy lifting for you. You can create pages, generate content, customize designs, and publish your site entirely without writing a single line of code.
How do I create my first website?
- Go to the Upstart home page and enter a prompt describing the site you want to create.
- Create an account or sign in.
- Upsie will generate your site — pages, layout, and content — based on your prompt.
- Customize your site in the editor.
- Click Publish when you're ready to go live.
The more specific your prompt, the better the result. For example: "A portfolio website for a freelance photographer with a gallery, an about page, and a contact form."
AI Assistant (Upsie)
What can Upsie do for me?
Upsie is your built-in AI assistant, available directly in the editor. It can:
- Create new projects and pages from a prompt
- Generate and rewrite content
- Suggest design improvements
- Help with SEO optimization
- Add features and integrations to your site
What are AI credits and how do they work?
Every interaction with Upsie consumes AI credits. The number of credits used depends on the complexity of the request. You can monitor your balance from the Plan page in your dashboard. Free plans include a limited number of credits; paid plans include a higher monthly allocation.
Do AI credits expire?
Yes. Credits expire after 2 months on paid plans, and after 1 month on the Free plan. Credits are consumed oldest-first.
What happens when I run out of AI credits?
You can purchase additional credit packs at any time from the Plan page in your dashboard. You can also enable auto-purchase there, so a pack is bought automatically when your balance reaches 0. Upgrading your plan also increases your monthly credit allocation.
Can Upstart generate images?
Yes. Generate images from a text description in your project's asset library, or simply ask Upsie in the chat. Image generation consumes AI credits.
Can I use my own LLM account (Anthropic, OpenAI…)?
Yes. Subscribe with the Use my LLM account option to connect your own provider API key and get 50% off your plan. Your AI usage is then billed by your provider. See Use your own LLM account.
Publishing & Domains
How do I publish my site?
Click the Publish button from the editor or from your projects list. You can publish immediately or schedule the publication for a later date and time.
Can I use my own domain name?
Yes, on paid plans. You can either connect an existing domain (by updating its DNS settings) or purchase a new domain directly through Upstart.
What is an Upstart domain (.upstart.do)?
When you create a project, Upstart automatically assigns a free subdomain in the format your-project-name.upstart.do. Your site is immediately accessible at this address once published, with no configuration needed.
Can I schedule when my site goes live?
Yes. When publishing, you can optionally set a future date and time. Your site will go live automatically at the scheduled time.
Can I restore a previous version of my project?
Yes. Every change is saved in the project's version history. You can preview any past version safely and restore it — nothing is ever lost.
CMS & Dynamic Content
What is the CMS and do I need it?
The CMS (Content Management System) lets you create and manage structured databases — such as blog posts, product listings, or team members — that power dynamic content on your site. You don't need it for simple static sites, but it's very useful if your content changes regularly or needs to repeat across multiple pages.
What is the difference between static and dynamic content?
- Static content is fixed directly in the editor: text, images, and other elements that don't change automatically.
- Dynamic content is pulled from a database and displayed automatically on your pages. It's ideal for content that updates regularly (blog posts, product catalogs, testimonials, etc.).
Can I schedule content to be published automatically?
Yes. Database items can be saved as a draft, published immediately, or scheduled for a specific date and time. Scheduled items go live automatically at the set time.
Collaboration & Workspaces
How do I collaborate with my team?
Projects are grouped in workspaces. Invite teammates to a workspace by email from Profile and Settings → Workspaces, and they get access to all of its projects. Members can be admins (manage members and settings) or editors (work on projects).
Can I have multiple workspaces?
Every account includes one workspace by default. Business plan can create multiple workspaces to separate different teams or sets of projects.
Account & Billing
What plans are available?
Upstart offers several plans, from a free tier to business-level options, billed monthly or annually. Visit the Pricing page for a full feature and limits comparison.
How do I upgrade or change my plan?
Go to Profile and Settings → Plan in your dashboard. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing cycle. Note: you cannot downgrade if your current usage exceeds the new plan's limits.
How do I manage my invoices and payment method?
All billing settings are available from the Billing page in your dashboard. You can update your payment method, view billing history, and download past invoices.
Is two-factor authentication supported?
Yes. You can enable two-factor authentication (2FA) from the Security page in your dashboard. 2FA adds an extra verification step at login to protect your account.
Analytics
Does Upstart have built-in analytics?
Yes. Analytics tracking is enabled automatically when you publish a project. You can view page views, traffic sources, and visitor engagement from the Analytics dashboard in your dashboard. Advanced analytics features are available on paid plans.
Can I use Google Analytics with Upstart?
Yes. Ask Upsie to add your Google Analytics tracking ID to your project, and it will handle the integration for you.
